Several trends can be spotted over the last years when it comes to how software is being developed and sold. Two powerful such trends are the Open Source movement, and Software As A Service (SAAS). Sometimes the two are even combined. Without knowing it, you probably use Open Source software every day. It could be your browser (Firefox), Operating System (Linux), the server serving up the web pages you look at (Apache). It could be in you mobile phone, or even in your car. Software producers are waking up to the fact the the old way of licencing their products isn't always good enough in today's world. Their products can be bypassed by open source upstarts that quickly can grow to surpass them in functionality and usability.
